Auction guarantee
An auction guarantee is a commitment that a work will sell for at least a set minimum, regardless of bidding. The guarantee comes from the auction house or a third party. If bids fall short, the guarantor buys the work or covers the difference. Guarantees became central to evening sales at Christie's and Sotheby's in the 2010s, shifting financial risk away from the consignor.
