Institutional critique

Institutional critique is a practice in which artists examine and challenge the workings of museums, galleries, and the art market from within. It emerged around 1970 with artists such as Hans Haacke, Michael Asher, and Daniel Buren, who exposed the economic and political interests behind institutions that present themselves as neutral.
