Post-photography

Post-photography describes image-making that no longer depends on a camera recording light from a real scene. It covers computer-generated, composited, and AI-generated images that look photographic but have no direct referent. The idea was named in the 1990s, notably by William J. Mitchell, and returned to prominence with AI image tools that make the line between photograph and construction hard to see.
